The Eurovision Song Contest makes way for the Eurovision Fan Contest in 2020. Iceland are the 4/5 favourites to take the OGAE fan vote with pop-hit ‘Think About Things’.

And the competition’s illustrious history has got us thinking back to some of the most memorable moments of the world’s longest running TV show.

We’ve come up with four of the best below – what do you think?

ABBA, Waterloo, Sweden 1974

Eurovision is widely credited for propelling Scandinavian group ABBA to worldwide stardom. But it was little old Brighton, England that would showcase their catchy tracks, flashy glad-rags and dizzying platforms to a European audience for the first time.

Waterloo’s simplicity was its biggest selling-point as the memorable lyrics continue to live long in the memory.

Despite their subsequent worldwide success, the band will never forget that night in Brighton.

Bucks Fizz, Making Your Mind Up, Great Britain, 1981

Who remembers that famous skirt-ripping routine? Bucks Fizz’s bubbly pop-hit Making Your Mind Up stole hearts and won the contest.

The show catapulted the band to fame and went on to have three UK number records and become one of the top-selling groups of the 1980s.

Riverdance, Ireland, 1994

Time seemed to stop when Irish dancers Michael Flatley and Jean Butler performed their enthralling Riverdance during the interval of the 1994 Eurovision song contest in Dublin.

The seven-minute showpiece earned the dance troupe a standing ovation and went onto become one of the most successful stage shows of all time.

Conchita Wurst, Rise Like a Phoenix, Austria, 2014

Eurovision fans were left mesmerised by Austrian drag act Conchita Wurst in 2014. Her rousing vocals and glamourous persona won fans across the globe and helped reopen the homophobia debate.

Wurst’s victory was a win for all LGBT groups as she proclaimed, “We are unity and we are unstoppable”.

She has become on the most loved and recognisable acts Eurovision has ever seen.
