Saturday’s Wimbledon betting tips and preview

There will be a new first-time grand slam winner on Saturday when Ons Jabeur and Elena Rybakina compete in the women’s final at Wimbledon.

Third seed Jabeur needed three sets to get past her good friend Tatjana Maria in the semi-finals on Thursday, but is the 8/13 favourite to beat Rybakina, who proved too good for 2019 champion Simona Halep.

The Russian-born Kazakh is 5/4 to win the title as we look at the odds for the final in our Wimbledon betting tips which produced an evens winner with our only selection on Friday as Novak Djokovic beat Cameron Norrie in over 31.5 games.

Ons Jabeur v Elena Rybakina

Saturday’s final will be a fascinating contrast in styles as Jabeur’s mixture of slice and drop shots comes up against the power game of Rybakina, who switched allegiance from Russia to Kazakhstan four years ago to receive more funding.

That seems to have paid dividends as the 17th seed marched past in-form Halep 6-3 6-3 to reach a maiden grand slam final, like Jabeur who reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals last year,

Trailblazing Jabeur could become the first Arab or African woman to win one of the majors, but she will need to play better than she did in the second set against Maria, although she raced into a 5-0 lead in the decider which she eventually took 6-1 on Centre Court.

As a child, Jabeur set her sights on winning at Roland Garros, but now her ambitions have switched to Wimbledon.

She said: “The dream kind of started last year when I enjoyed playing here, enjoyed the crowd. I knew I was playing good on grass because of my game and everything.

“But last year, Melanie, my mental coach, reminded me I told her ‘I’m coming back next year for the title’, when I lost in the quarter-finals. I just love everything around here, the atmosphere and everything. It was my main goal from the beginning of the season, and even from last year.”

To achieve that she must get past Rybakina against whom she has enjoyed some close battles in the last few years.

They met twice last year, Jabeur winning in three sets at the Dubai Championships in March and seven months later the Tunisian was leading 6-4 3-2 in Chicago when Rybakina retired with a knee injury during their quarter-final.

However, Rybakina won 6-1 6-7 6-2 in their first ever meeting in Wuhan, so we fancy another three-set battle at 11/8 as the first of Saturday’s Wimbledon betting tips.

Rybakina has dropped just one set so far, against Ajla Tomljanovic in the last eight, but she benefited from a poor serving display from Halep, who double-faulted nine times.

Going into the match, Halep had said she was playing better than when she beat Serena Wiliams in the 2019 final, so Rybakina’s straight-sets victory was certainly impressive, but she has lost her last four finals.

We’ll go with Jabeur to win in three sets at 16/5 as the last of our Wimbledon betting tips.
