US Open Day 7: Sharapova to breeze past Wozniacki

Published:

The days are flying by in New York and as a result, the stakes are getting higher and the matches harder all the time at the US Open.

While that can make winners harder to pick, it means a lot more value starts drifting into the marketplace, and we’ve picked out three bets to take advantage of increasing prices.

Maria Sharapova to beat Caroline Woznicki 2-0 @ 1/1

The Danish player was many people’s dark horse in the women’s outfights having arrived at Flushing Meadows in fine form, but Sharapova is likely to prove a bridge too far.

Wozniacki is down 5-2 in their career head to head and lost their only encounter at a grand slam in straight sets at the US Open in 2010.

Sharapova has only needed three sets to beat Wozniacki in one of her five victories and the Russian’s dismantling of Sabine Lisicki in the last round showcased her imperious form.

Lucie Safarova to beat Shuai Peng @ 4/7

Although Peng is in excellent form, having won all three of her matches at the competition thus far in straight sets, including knocking out Agnieszka Radwanska, the savvy punter would be wise to oppose here in the fourth round.

Safarova has won their last four encounters and is having a fantastic season herself, reaching the semi-finals at Wimbledon and hitting career bests in three of the four slams, including here at the US Open.

Gael Monfils to beat Richard Gasquet 3-0 @ 7/2

When he’s focussed, Monfils can mix it with the very best players in the world, and his recent form suggests that he is on track to go deep into the competition at Flushing Meadows.

Monfils has only lost to Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer during the US Open Series, taking a set off each, and has progressed serenely into the third round in New York.

Gasquet has also not dropped a set so far, but Monfils leads his compatriot 6-4 in their career head to head, including two straight sets victories in their clashes in 2014.

For those wary of taking Monfils in straight sets, the 8/11 that he wins the match also looks generous.
