With a few minor exceptions – the 1966 football World Cup, the 2003 Rugby World Cup and the 2010 World Twenty20 – England’s teams have been underwhelming at major tournaments for too long and it seems 38 per cent of you feel the English are the biggest bottlers in the world of sport.
Brazil’s 7-1 mauling at the hands of Germany in their own back yard last summer and AC Milan’s capitulation when 3-0 up against Liverpool in the 2005 Champions League final were also top contenders and were voted into joint second with 28 per cent of the total votes apiece.
Rory McIlroy – who was tipped by yesterday’s poll to be the most successful sportsman from the Emerald Isle in 2015 – received six per cent of the votes for his Masters meltdown in 2011.
The Northern Irishman was four shots to the good going into the final day and knew a steady round would see him home but a horrendous eight over saw him finish some 10 shots off the pace!
