Following his surprise appointment at Defence Secretary, our traders think Gavin Williamson has an outside shot of becoming the next Prime Minister.

As chief whip, Williamson didn’t appear to be in the running to replace Sir Michael Fallon in Theresa May’s cabinet.

But following his promotion, speculation has already begun over his next move. He’s now 33/1 to become the next PM after May.

The South Staffordshire MP’s odds of becoming the next Tory leader have also been slashed to 25/1 (from 66/1).

Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes said: “Williamson wasn’t even on our radar, nor punters’, for the Defence Sec vacancy, but within an hour he’s now being backed to succeed Theresa May, albeit as an outsider still.”
