Tom Daley is currently 3/1 to win diving gold in London – but he faces yet another tough test against favourite Qui Bo.
Despite him and partner Pete Waterfield leading the synchronised dive on Monday, the 18-year-old missed out on a medal after a disappointing final three dives.
The major damage was done on their fourth dive – a reverse three-and-a-half somersault – but Waterfield admitted it was his fault.
Waterfield said: “After that dive, I said sorry, but Tom told me not to worry.
“It’s the worst place to finish at an Olympics. I’d rather be last. To miss out on bronze by nine points is tough.”
Daley performed well throughout the event though and, in the individual event, he should be expected to come away with a medal.
However, whether that medal will be gold is another matter altogether.
Qui Bo of China is the current favourite for the gold at 8/15 and has had the better of Daley several times in his career.
The FINA Diver of the Year is the reigning World Champion and, if he performs to his capabilities, the 19-year-old, should come out on top.
However, Daley put in a solid performance in the synchronised diving and should not be discounted in the gold medal betting.
