We’re back off to Oklahoma for this evening’s stateside soiree as Will Rogers Downs stages the 18th card of its Spring Meeting from 19:15.
There are ten contests to look forward to in total, and we’ve enlisted the help of trader Ian Rozzier to run through the big race of the night plus the key jockey bookings.
Miranda Diane Stakes
The feature race on the evening is the $55,000 Miranda Diane Stakes (23:15) where Spring Steen is looking to repeat her 2019 success.
However, we have to question whether she is anything close to the sort of form she displayed last year after a disrupted preparation caused by her trainer Francisco Bravo serving a suspension after one of his horses tested positive for xylazine.
She sauntered to a 9l victory 12 months ago but comes into tonight’s renewal of the sprint race for older Oklahoma-bred fillies and mares off a disappointing return in the Wilma Makiller Stakes at the beginning of the month.
The return to state-bred competition will aid her chances but this looks a deeper race than 2019 and it may be worth siding with Three Chords.
She is having her first start at Will Rogers Downs but has won twice in Oklahoma-bred stakes company at Remington including the 2018 Oklahoma Classics Distaff Sprint.
Jockeys to note
So far the meeting has been dominated by jockeys Floyd Wethey Jr. and Ty Kennedy who have ridden 46 winners between them and have both finished in the money on over half of their mounts.
Wethey Jr’s best chance of a winner is Our Vision in the 20:15, while Kennedy will be disappointed if he doesn’t enter the winner’s enclosure in the 20:45 when he partners Stephen’s Answer for the meet’s leading trainer Robertino Diodoro.
Floyd Wethey Jr. booked mounts: Awesome Gordo (19:15), Nurse List (19:45), Our Vision (20:15), Deep Explorer (20:45), Chiron Eclipse (21:15), Daneira (22:15) & Fiddlers Tsunami (23:15)
Ty Kennedy booked mounts: Survey (19:15), Final Design (19:45), Stephen’s Answer (20:45) & Fool’s Paradise (22:45)
