Foundry already has plenty going for him in his quest to win the St Leger, but there is now even more reason to back him given Ladbrokes’ promotion for the final Classic of the Flat season.
Ladbrokes will not only be refunding losing online bets on all second-place finishers in the St Leger showpiece, but on all races over the four days of the St Leger meeting. See all terms and conditions here.
This includes the prestigious Doncaster Cup and five other Group 2 contests.
When looking at the results of the St Leger over the last decade, it is those towards the head of the market that have regularly occupied the bridesmaid position, with Aidan O’Brien more unlucky than most.
Despite the victories celebrated by O’Brien in 2002 and 2004 with Brian Boru and Scorpion respectively, the trainer has saddled the runner-up on a further three occasions, most recently 12 months ago with odds-on favourite Camelot.
He currently has three entries this year, with Leading Light and Foundry seeming the more definite starters.
In the last nine St Leger renewals, only once has a horse started at a bigger price than 15/2 and finished second, which was The Last Drop at 50/1 in 2006.
However, given this was the year that the St Leger was run at York because Doncaster was closed for redevelopment, it may be wise to ignore this anomaly from the norm.
Both Leading Light (4/1) and Foundry (6/1) are in the right price bracket to be a St Leger runner-up based on previous renewals, but preference is for the latter, as the former may be caught short for a bit of finishing speed.
Despite it being only his second racecourse start, Foundry finished second in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York last time and six of the last 11 St Leger winners were among the top three in this contest in the same season.
There has been consistent support for Foundry, being backed in from 25/1 into 14/1 after his Great Voltigeur performance and then into his current price of 6/1.
