August seems to be the month in which the average tipsters in the Racing Post naps challenge are becoming the ones to watch.
Steve Simpson of the Blackpool Gazette, Newmarket of the Racing Post and the Guardian are all providing a negative return for their naps this season, but all three are on solid runs at the moment.
Both Newmarket and The Guardian are looking for a fourth winner in a row today but Simpson is looking for his fifth winner in a row today and so we’re focusing on his nap, Pure Faith, in the 15:20 at Ffos Las.
15:20 Ffos Las: Pure Faith – 5/2
There may only be four horses in this Class 4 Novices’ Chase at Ffos Las, but if Pure faith is as good as Simpson thinks he is then we’re in for a cracker.
Barizan, Black Jack Blues and U B Carefull will oppose Pure Faith in today’s race and Barizan, who oozed class over hurdles, is currently the 11/8 favourite for today’s race.
His three starts over fences have brought two wins but his jumping has been erratic in all three runs and a fall at Southwell, despite starting the 1/4 favourite two runs ago, is enough to put you off.
AP McCoy is on board today and he should steady the ship, but against two strong horses in Black Jack Blues and Pure Faith, Barizan will face extra pressure.
McCoy’s move to Barizan means the champion jockey will not be searching for a fourth win in five starts aboard the 2/1 second favourite Black Jack Blues.
Instead Aaodhagan Conlon takes the ride and while he has won on Black Jack Blues around Ffos Las before, that was his only win in five starts with the horse.
With negatives for the two market leaders it is worth looking at Pure Faith who finished second behind Black Jack Blues at Ffos Las in June.
He was giving 7lbs to Black Jack Blues on that occasion and off level weights today, Peter Bowen’s seven-year-old can upset the odds and make it five wins in five days for Simpson.
