Paul Townend looks ahead to the Irish Grand National on Easter Monday

I have yet to win the Irish Grand National. I came close on one of Willie’s, Away We Go in 2013, but I didn’t get past the fourth or fifth fence on my last couple of rides in the race, so we will try again this year.

I have chosen to ride Agusta Gold (17.00). She will be having her first run for us. She seems in great form at home. She has loads of experience.

There were plenty of things I had to factor in before picking her. Salsaretta ran okay in Cheltenham behind Colreevy and Elimay, but I don’t have a great record with Brahma Bull so things kind of sorted themselves out. I think Agusta Gold is the one open to most improvement.

The weights going up wasn’t ideal as she has to carry 11st 3lb now but it’s still a competitive rating. She should have no problem with the trip.

She is a bit of an unknown. Mags Mullins did very well with her and hopefully Willie can get a bit more out of her.
