Paul Townend gives update on his Arkle ride and weekend plans

| 12.03.2021

It was hugely disappointing to hear the news that Energumene will miss the Arkle as he was one horse I was really looking forward to riding.

It’s a bitter pill to swallow. I would imagine I will now switch to Franco De Port.

I only have one ride this weekend when I will be going to Navan on Saturday to ride El Barra (13.40) in a novice hurdle. He’s actually been disappointing since he won his bumper in Thurles.

He was very disappointing over Christmas over 2m but ran better in January in Naas over 2m3f. He will have to improve again back over 2m if he is to get the better of Coqolino, who has form with Bob Olinger if you go far enough back.

I will be sitting out Sunday to prepare for next week’s Cheltenham Festival. I had my final Covid test on Friday and if all is clear I fly to England on Sunday evening.
