ITV Racing Tips: Can Kimifive come home first in the Stewards’ Cup?
The government may have put a halt to the pilot crowd trial that was expected to take place at Goodwood on Saturday, but we won’t let that dampen our enthusiasm for the Stewards’ Cup.
The 6f sprint is one of the highlights of the entire week and it’s the feature contest on a nine-race card live on ITV which also includes the Lillie Langtry Stakes and four renewals from Newmarket.
We’ve previewed the three main events from across the two tracks in our ITV Racing Tips.
RACE OF THE DAY – STEWARDS’ CUP – GOODWOOD, 15:35
Three of the last five winners of the Stewards’ Cup have been drawn in stall four or lower, so a considerable chance has to go to the likeable Kimifive, drawn in stall one, who posted a big effort in the Bunbury Cup a fortnight ago.
Joseph Tuite’s charge stayed on well to finish sixth that day despite trouble in-running and drops back to 6f here as he bids to take advantage of an enticing mark to win for a second time at Goodwood.
Star apprentice Cieron Fallon takes off a further 3lb with his claim, and all of those factors combined make the five-year-old a seriously interesting proposition in what is always an open race.
Nahaarr is the one he’ll need to beat after the Dark Angel colt landed a gamble at Newbury two weeks back. William Haggas’s inmate saddles a 7lb rise for that but looks a progressive type, and it may not prevent him following up.
Elsewhere, regular handicapper Summerghand will need to work from a career-high mark to get involved, while Meraas, Swindler and Wokingham-fourth Louie De Palma also have claims in a typically competitive renewal.
NEXT BEST – LILLIE LANGRY STAKES – GOODWOOD, 15:00
Four fantastic fillies are pencilled in to tackle the Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes, with 2019 winner Enbihaar a hot favourite to make it back-to-back successes over the 1m 6f distance.
John Gosden’s stayer cruised home to win by 5l from Manuela De Vega 12 months ago, and the daughter of Redoute’s Choice looks primed to follow-up after a positive spin at Newmarket.
Last year’s runner-up represents the biggest threat, but she’ll need to reverse placings with the favourite and overcome a 3lb penalty for winning the Lancashire Oaks last time.
The four-year-old carries the main threat to Enibhaar, with Irish Oaks-fifth Snow and Cabaletta making up the remainder of the small field.
ONE TO WATCH – CHALICE STAKES – NEWMARKET, 15:15
We’re off to Newmarket for the final race of our preview, where the lightly-raced Katara is the one to note for Oisin Murphy and Sir Michael Stoute.
The Deep Impact filly broke her maiden when drawing clear to win by 5l at Kempton on 1st July and looks for all the world like she’ll appreciate the extra furlong on offer here.
This is tougher but the three-year-old is open to further progression and can make her presence felt in a race where Cosmic Princess and Expressionism also hold chances.
The latter has already won well in Listed company on the all-weather and remains unexposed after winning over this distance at Kempton last August.
