Girolamo can upset St Leger entrants at Glorious Goodwood

Published:

Glorious Goodwood is finally upon us and although there is another day’s wait until Frankel reappears on the racecourse, there is still plenty of decent contests set to take place.

14:00 Goodwood – Cai Shen @ 7/1

The choice from the Richard Hannon yard of jockey Richard Hughes, Cai Shen has been running creditably in better races than this of late and gets in here off an equal official rating.

The better ground at Goodwood should also help, with conditions being slightly on the softer side recently, while this 1m1f could arguably be his ideal trip.

Spanish Duke represents the each-way value back on a workable mark, assuming that he does not pull too hard early on and can make progress from a tricky draw.

14:35 Goodwood – Girolamo @ 7/2

This threatens to be a decent guide to the Ladbrokes St Leger, with Michelangelo, Noble Mission, Encke and Minimise Risk all holding early entries at Doncaster.

Michelangelo looks especially interesting as he is stepped up to 1m4f for the first time, but is a short price for what he has actually achieved to date, despite his clear potential.

Girolamo represents the same trainer and jockey combination as Danedream and was third in the German Derby, with the winner coming out again since and winning by eight lengths.

This is the best form in the race.

15:10 Goodwood – Foxtrot Romeo @ 11/2

Chachamaidee is a worthy favourite having triumphed at Glorious Goodwood last year and she would have likely won the Windsor Forest at Royal Ascot on her last start if not making a mess of the start.

However, Foxtrot Romeo enters each-way calculations as the step back to 7f looks a wise move after she has failed to see out 1m a couple of times of late.

Meanwhile, she is the only three-year-old in the field and this age group have been responsible for four of the last five winners of the Lennox Stakes.

15:45 Goodwood – Dominate @ 8/1

Dominate may be the second string of the Hannon yard, but the jockey booking of Ryan Moore is certainly no negative.

He is the most inexperienced in the field, but potentially untapped in terms of potential and pedigree suggests that the firm surface should suit, despite winning on soft ground last time.
