US PGA Championship tips: Who wins first Major of 2020?

Rory McIlroy

After an extended delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we’ve finally got a Golf Major on our hands this week, with the US PGA Championship from San Francisco.

It’s been more than 12 months since the last Major, when Shane Lowry sparked jubilant scenes in the Open at Royal Portrush.

Now we go again, but who’s maintained their form during the most unpredictable and uncertain of seasons? Let us know who you’re backing this weekend on Twitter @Ladbrokes!

Here’s your one-stop guide to this year’s US PGA Championship favourites.

US PGA Championship favourites

As we head to the TPC Harding Park course, Justin Thomas heads the world rankings – and the US PGA betting at 9/1.

Thomas is in scintillating form right now, having hit some superb shots en route to victory in the St. Jude a week ago. The 27-year-old is a PGA Championship winner too, doing so at Quail Hollow in 2017.

Brooks Koepka can boast two PGA Championship successes, however, winning back-to-back tournaments in 2018 and 2019. The American is 10/1 to make it three in a row.

Like Thomas, Koepka heads to California in good nick, having finished tied-second to Thomas in Tennessee last week.

That pair have won each of the last three PGA Championships, but it’s 12/1 shot Rory McIlroy who won on the PGA Tour’s last visit to Harding Park in 2015.

McIlroy is still searching a first Major since 2014, but his accuracy off the tee could pay dividends here. Likewise, Spain’s Jon Rahm is one of the biggest drivers on the tour, and could be a contender if he finds his groove.

Big drives off the tee could be key around the San Francisco course this weekend, and plenty will therefore be looking towards Bryson DeChambeau.

The American has divided opinion with his new bulked-up physique and hard-driving approach to the game. But in theory at least, driving long should be the way to success this weekend.

Xander Schauffele could be in the mix too at 18/1. The 26-year-old has posted four top-six finishes in his last six Majors, and would have been a contender to Thomas last week but for a rare quadruple bogey on the Friday.

Likewise, 25/1 shot Patrick Cantlay has shown all the skills needed to win a Major, and his recent form suggests he could break his duck sooner rather than later. Then there’s Webb Simpson, also at 25s, who has been flying under the radar in 2020, while racking up a number of fine performances.

And should the weekend boil down to the power players, you can never discount Dustin Johnson (20/1) and Tiger Woods (25/1). Both players’ talents off the tee are well-known, but recent form suggests they may have to work to do on their short game to wrap up the win this weekend.
