“The greatest show on grass” as the organisers claim, or better known as the Waste Management Phoenix Open, makes its annual appearance on the PGA Tour schedule at TPC Scottsdale for the 29th consecutive year.
Only TPC Sawgrass (31 years) outdoes the Arizona complex in longevity of hosting duties, meaning plenty of form to explore from a betting perspective and lots of big names vying for the winning share of $1,134,000 and 500 FedExCup points.
Even fairly early into the wraparound season the top 10 in the FedEx standings have a fairly familiar feel to them, with 2011 champion Bill Haas moving into ninth ahead of this one thanks to his first win of 2015 at last week’s Humana Challenge – tipped on these very pages.
The Green Jacket holder backed up his HSBC Champions win in November with 10th spot at the recent Hyundai Tournament and having blown a 54-hole lead at TPC Scottsdale last year, Watson is fancied to be challenging come Sunday.
However, in such an extensive and talented field a few other picks get a doff of the cap at pocket-swelling odds, not least Scott Piercy, to continue the FedEx theme.
The understated Nevadan is a 40/1 chance in Arizona at a course where he shot a final-round 61 two seasons ago to finish third, before tying for 15th in 2014.
Piercy is the only member of the current FedEx top 10 not to have recorded a victory yet this season, though he finished runner-up at the Sony Open a fortnight ago and has only shot one 70+ round in his last eight.
Of the other truly stellar names it’s two-time Waste Management winner Phil Mickelson, at 20s, who is worth some spending a few of your hard-earned on.
Not only does Mickelson have those two titles under his belt, he holds the course record of 60, while a promising showing at the Humana also bodes well for the lefty.
