Vettel wins in Hungary, but Hamilton remains odds-on for the title

The Hungarian Grand Prix proved a tense affair, and though Sebastian Vettel claimed a much-needed win for Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton is still the title favourite.

Vettel claimed his fourth win of the season, having taken pole position on Saturday, while team-mate Kimi Raikkonen followed him home for a 1-2 finish.

Hamilton, having been allowed past Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas to attack the leading duo, sacrificed his podium finish at the final turn for Bottas, ending in fourth.

It means Vettel has extended his one-point lead into a 14-point margin as the sport enters it’s annual three-week summer break.

But despite heading the championship with 11 of the 20 races now completed, the German is still the outsider in this title fight.

Our traders still fancy Hamilton to get the job done, and the Briton is 4/5 to win a fourth world crown this year.

Vettel is the relative underdog at 6/5, while Bottas is the only other man in contention at 20/1.

The concern for Vettel and Ferrari is that three of their four wins this year have come on the slower, twistier circuits of Australia, Monaco and Hungary.

And that’s a worry because only one of the remaining nine races – Singapore – fits that profile.

Mercedes have been the team to beat on the faster, more flowing tracks, and that should put them in good stead at the majority of events in the coming months, particularly Belgium, Japan and Malaysia.

So Hamilton has an excellent chance of eroding Vettel’s still-slender advantage, and that’s why the Stevenage-ace remains favourite for this year’s championship.
