Sebastian Vettel heads to the Japanese Grand Prix in a must-win position if he’s to end Ferrari’s 11-year wait for a world drivers champion.
The German trails title rival Lewis Hamilton by 50 points, with just 125 left to play for.
F1 Title odds
Hamilton, who has dropped just 14 points in the last seven races, is now the 1/50 favourite to win his fifth drivers title this season.
The Englishman has won five of the last seven races, and finished second in the other two.
His scintillating form has left Vettel in the shade. The four-time champion has only won two of the last nine Grand Prix and is now 14/1 for the championship – having been odds-on earlier this year.
Japanese GP odds
If Hamilton wins this Sunday, then he’ll be at least 57 points ahead with only 100 remaining. It’s beginning to become a question of when he becomes champion, rather than if.
And he’ll head to Japan’s famous figure-of-eight circuit as the odds-on 4/5 favourite. Mercedes were in dominant form last weekend in Russia, and it seems Ferrari don’t have an answer for the German marquee right now.
The Finn cut a somewhat subdued figure last weekend, having been asked to hand victory to Hamilton despite out-qualifying his Mercedes team-mate.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo might fancy their changes around Suzuka’s sweeping corners.
Verstappen was in scintillating form last weekend to finish fifth. The Dutchman will be Red Bull’s lead driver next season, and has shown a mature edge in recent races.
He’s 16/1 to win on Sunday, but a dash of rain or safety car could bring him and his team-mate (18/1) right into play.
