Formula One’s version of Groundhog Day continued at Interlagos as Mercedes dominated qualifying ahead of Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix, though a little further back on the grid Jenson Button is very well positioned to register his ninth top-six finish of the season.
The grid has a very familiar feel to it over in South America, but we’ve delved into the stats and the form to come up with three fresh bets for the penultimate race of 2014.
Jenson Button to finish in the top six @ 4/6
Although the Brit has cut a frustrated figure for large parts of the season, the 2009 world champion continues to get the most out of his McLaren and outperform his teammate Kevin Magnussen in the process.
Despite encountering problems with his rear traction in America when finishing 12th in Austin, Button had just claimed fourth and fifth-place finishes in Russia and Japan.
Of course podiums and wins are what he craves, but a ninth top six finish of the campaign is very much in the offing, especially at a track he has relished down the years; where his last five finishes at Interlagos read
5th, 5th, 3rd, 1st and 4th.
Nico Rosberg to win @ 6/5
Although the German hasn’t been able to stop his title rival Lewis Hamilton from winning the last five races, Rosberg has once again stolen pole.
His chances are increased by Hamilton’s poor recent record at Interlagos, where the champions leader hasn’t finished higher than third before in seven attempts.
Felipe Massa for a podium finish @ 5/4
At his home Grand Prix the Williams driver put in a fantastic lap in Q3 to ensure he starts in third position.
Massa has grown in confidence in the second half of the season, finishing third in Italy and was just shaded to
another taste of the champagne in America by Daniel Ricciardo.
