Scotland won plenty of fans with their gritty goalless draw against England at the European Championship but they are 8/1 in the World Cup qualifying Group F odds despite an unbeaten start.
Steve Clarke’s side finished bottom of their Euro 2020 group with just one point on the back of defeats by Czech Republic and Croatia at Hampden Park but they have been solid in qualifying for next year’s World Cup in Qatar.
Draws against Austria and Israel were followed by a 4-0 victory against Faroe Islands to leave them in second place in Group F, four points behind leaders Denmark, the team they next meet in Copenhagen on September 1.
Second place would be good enough to secure a place in the play-offs which could involve a three-way battle with Austria and Israel.
Danes top after perfect start
Denmark lead the way after taking maximum points from their first three games, scoring 14 goals and conceding none in a superb start to their campaign which means they are 2/7 in the World Cup qualifying Group F odds.
The Danes became everyone’s second favourite team for the way they reacted to the cardiac arrest of Christian Eriksen during their Euro 2020 group game against Finland, yet still reached the semi-finals in the absence of their key midfielder.
Eriksen played a crucial role in qualifying for the European Championship finals with five goals, the most of any member of the Denmark squad, but whether he plays again is open to question.
They still reached the last four, however, and even took the lead against England with a superb free-kick from Mikkel Damsgaard, one of the stand-out players of the tournament and linked with a £35million move to Real Madrid.
Austria beat Ukraine and North Macedonia to qualify for the knockout stage of the Euros as runners-up but lost to Italy in extra time in the last 16.
They have made a mediocre start on the road to Qatar, drawing 2-2 in Scotland followed by a 4-0 home defeat against Denmark six days later.
Austria also trailed 1-0 at home to Faroe Islands but battled back for a 3-1 win which has left them in fourth place in the table and 4/1 in the World Cup qualifying Group F odds to finish top of the pile.
Israel are above them in the table on goal difference, with their sole win from three games coming in a 4-1 victory in Moldova.
At 33/1 in the World Cup qualifying Group F odds, Israel are viewed as outsiders as they look to qualify for a major tournament for the second time in their history.
