As football takes an unexpected backseat for now, we’ve gone all misty eyed and nostalgic at some of the Premier League’s glorious past.
We’ve flicked through the goalkeeping archives and come up with our best four shot-stoppers the league has ever seen.
But who comes out on top?
Peter Schmeichel
Perhaps the most imposing figure the Premier League has ever seen between the sticks. The Dane’s nickname could have been ‘Tiger King’ as he would sprawl out like a big cat to thwart some of the league’s hottest marksman.
Schmeichel scooped major honours including five league titles and a Champions League in an illustrious career. He’s just gotta be in the discussion!
David Seaman
Arsenal have had some hot-heads in goal in recent times, but perhaps their best has been this composed, pony-tailed Yorkshireman.
Seaman won all there was to win domestically and established himself as England’s number one.
His big frame didn’t diminish his agility either – remember that save against Sheffield United?
Petr Cech
443 appearances. 202 clean sheets. And with that Petr Cech became Premier League royalty.
A quartet of golden gloves and another four league titles with Chelsea, Cech was the immoveable object in net for 15-straight seasons in the English top flight.
If you want longevity, then Cech is right at the front of the queue.
Edwin Van der Sar
Schmeichel left a massive void when he departed Old Trafford in 1999, so much so that it took a full six years for Sir Alex Ferguson to find his replacement.
Step forward Edwin Van der Sar. The imposing Dutchman’s presence in goal helped Man United bag another four Premier League titles and a Champions League gong.
He’s a shoe in, right?!
