USA v Mexico betting tips and odds

CONCACAF Gold Cup organisers got the final they wanted as defending champions Mexico will go to battle with arch rivals USA in the early hours of Monday morning.

Gyasi Zardes’ late goal gave United Stated a 1-0 victory against World Cup hosts Qatar and they are 21/20 underdogs to beat Mexico, who scored in the ninth minute of stoppage time to secure a 2-1 victory over Canada.

This will be the seventh time the nations have met in the Gold Cup final so we’re looking at the markets and odds as part of our USA v Mexico betting tips.

Match Odds

Monday’s final in Nevada is a repeat of the showpiece from two years ago when Jonathan dos Santos’ 73rd-minute goal gave Mexico a 1-0 victory in front of more than 62,000 fans in Chicago and a record-extending 11th title.

Gerardo Martino’s men conceded their first goal of the tournament in the semi-finals and are 5/2 to win to nil as they have on three occasions.

That said, they lost 3-2 in extra time to USA in the final of the inaugural CONCACAF Nations League in June when Christian Pulisic’s 114th-minute penalty secured victory.

That match finished 2-2 at the end of normal time so we go 2/1 on another draw and 10/3 with goals thrown into the equation as one of our USA v Mexico betting tips.

Gregg Berhalter’s side have won every match at this edition of the Gold Cup and four of those victories have been by a 1-0 scoreline which can be backed at 7/1 and they are 23/20 to lift the trophy.

However, this is a young squad mainly based in the MLS so Mexico are understandably favourites despite Hector Herrera’s late heroics against Canada and are available at 19/5 to win and both teams to score.

Talking Tactics

Mexico have won the last three times they have faced USA in the Gold Cup final and will hope to get one over their adversaries again in the appropriately named town of Paradise.

Martino is likely to stick with a 4-3-3 formation with Rogelio Funes Mori the main striker flanked by Jesus Corona and Orbelin Pineda, with Dos Santos and Herrera either side of Edson Alvarez in midfield.

Berhalter also favours a 4-3-3 and should stick with that formation despite losing the shot count 18-6 to Qatar, although USA dominated possession.

Daryl Dike spearheads the attack with Matthew Hoppe and Paul Arriola either side.
