Sport: Five things we learned from the weekend

Another weekend of sport has been and gone but there was no shortage of drama in the Premier League, horse racing or Formula 1.

We have pulled together five moments from across the sporting world which have got us talking.

Fernandes & Greenwood shine for five-star United

Manchester United’s fine form continued on Saturday afternoon as they cruised past Bournemouth with a 5-2 victory at Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes once again produced a display to leave United fans salivating with a pinpoint free-kick and two assists, matched by the young attacking prowess of Mason Greenwood who scored an impressive brace either side of half-time.

United hit five goals at Old Trafford for the first time since December 2011 and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will hope their rich vein of goalscoring form will continue as they look to end the season with a flourish in the Premier League.

Solskjaer will have one eye on next season and Fernandes and Greenwood look like being two players who can take them to the next level and challenge for silverware in 2020/21.

For Bournemouth, they remain nineteenth after slipping to their fifth defeat in a row. The Cherries are one point from safety with five games remaining.

Vardy joins the 100 club

It’s an elusive club to join and Jamie Vardy has become the latest player to score a century of Premier League goals after his double against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Vardy netted his 100th and 101st goals to become just the 29th man to achieve the feat as Leicester got their top four hopes back on track with three points at the King Power Stadium.

The 33-year old will now turn his attention to clinching this season’s Golden Boot with his most recent strike putting him two ahead of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on 21 goals.

Vardy had gone three league games without a goal, but he will hope his draught is behind him as Leicester look to secure Champions League football following their first victory since the restart.

It’s been an incredible rise for the former Fleetwood Town forward, who didn’t play in the Premier League until he was aged 27.

It’s fair to say it was £1 million well spent when Leicester signed him from non-league football in 2012.

O’Brien enjoys a Serpentine and Love double at Epsom

There was a shock at Epsom as 25/1 shot Serpentine claimed the Derby by five and a half lengths for Aidan O’Brien, who became the first trainer to win the race eight times.

Serpentine charged to victory ahead of the favourite Kameko, who was fourth and second-favourite English King, who finished fifth.

Khalifa Sat was second to claim an unlikely placing ahead of Serpentine’s 66-1 stablemate, Amhran Na Bhfiann in third.

In the Oaks, Love proved to be an emphatic winner to record the fastest ever winning time in the race to claim victory by nine lengths ahead of stablemate, Ennistymon and second-favourite Frankly Darling in third.

Botas clinches dramatic Austrian Grand Prix

Formula 1 returned to racing on Sunday and there was plenty of drama as Valtteri Bottas won a pulsating opening race of the season in Austria.

Lewis Hamilton suffered a dramatic late-race demotion with a five second penalty to drop from second to fourth after clashing with Alexander Albon to miss out on a podium.

Ferarri’s Charles Le Clerc claimed second after starting seventh on the grid with Lando Norris sealing his first-ever podium finish in third for McLaren.

20-year-old Norris recorded the fastest lap on the race on his final lap to edge out Hamilton but it was Bottas who came out on top before they do it all again in the Styrian Grand Prix at the same track next weekend.

DeChambeau the champion at Rocket Mortgage Classic

On the PGA Tour, Charles DeChambeau continued his good form to claim the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit.

The American produced a seven-under-par final-round 65 to beat compatriot Matthew Wolf by three shots to secure his seventh successive top ten finish on the PGA Tour.

Kevin Kisner, finished third on 18 under-par, two shots behind Wolff and five off DeChambeau.

Further back, Danny Willett and Tyrrell Hatton finished seven shots off the lead in a four-way tie for fourth place.
