Sport: Five things we learned from the weekend

It’s been another whirlwind weekend of sport which included the FA Cup final, British Grand Prix and start of the Scottish Premiership season.

Here our round-up of the weekend’s sporting headlines that you may have missed….

Arsenal win fourteenth FA Cup title

There is no doubt that the biggest news from the weekend came from Wembley where Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-1 in the FA Cup final on Saturday evening.

Two goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was enough to clinch a record fourteenth FA Cup for the Gunners, who have now secured a place in the Europa League next season.

Christian Pulisic gave Chelsea an early lead after six minutes, but they were soon pegged back when Cesar Azpilicueta fouled Aubameyang in the box, with the striker netting the penalty to level the scores.

Both sides continued to cancel each-other out in the second half, but it was Aubameyang who had the final say when he clipped the ball over Willy Caballero on 67 minutes.

Five minutes later, Chelsea’s evening went from bad to worse when Mateo Kovacic was sent off for a second bookable offence.

The Gunners held on and it was Mikel Arteta who ensured his side finished the season with a trophy.

Celtic and Rangers off to winning starts

The Scottish Premiership kicked off on Saturday as Celtic and Rangers both started the season with three points.

Steven Gerrard’s side travelled to Aberdeen on the opening day and it was Ryan Kent who scored the only goal of the game to gift Rangers victory midway through the first-half.

Celtic thumped relegation favourites Hamilton Academical on Sunday 5-1 thanks to a hat-trick from Odsonne Edouard. Jeremie Frimpong and Patryk Klimala were also on the scoresheet for the champions as they got their title defence off to the perfect start.

Elsewhere, there were victories for Hibernian and St Mirren with Dundee United drawing a goal apiece with St Johnstone.

Eddie Howe leaves Bournemouth

On Saturday, Bournemouth parted company with their manager Eddie Howe following the clubs relegation from the Premier League.

Howe had enjoyed a twenty-five-year association with the club as both a player and manager, taking them from League Two to an established side in the top flight before leaving the club by mutual consent.

The 42-year-old was the Premier League’s longest-serving manager, and the second-longest serving in England’s top four tiers.

The Cherries will now look to head in a new direction as they begin to prepare for Championship football next season.

Hamilton wins sensational British Grand Prix

An extraordinary race at Silverstone finished with Lewis Hamilton crossing the chequered flag on three wheels after suffering a puncture during the final lap.

Hamilton had led from the start but despite the late drama, he was able to record his seventh victory at the British Grand Prix ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc of Ferrari in third.

Hamilton’s team mate Valtteri Bottas also endured a tyre puncture on lap fifty which ultimately saw him drop out of the points in a dramatic finish at Silverstone.

Summerghand Goodwood joy

It was the final day of the Goodwood Festival on Saturday and it was Summerghand who claimed the feature Stewards’ Stakes.

There was a real battle for the line but it was Danny Tudhope who rode to victory to pip Kimifive in second and Brian the Snail in third.

The 22-1 shot was narrowly beaten in the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, but returned to emerge from a 27-strong field to win by a head at Goodwood.
