Spain v Portugal betting tips: Giants clash in Madrid

| 23.05.2021

The winners of the last three European Championships meet in a high-profile international friendly at Atletico Madrid’s Estadio Wanda Metropolitano on Friday night.

Spain, champions in 2008 and 2012, are 5/4 favourites to beat current holders Portugal, who defeated hosts France in extra time five years ago to win the tournament for the first time.

Both nations have exciting squads so let’s take a look at the history, markets and odds to help with your Spain v Portugal betting tips.

Match Odds

These teams shared a goalless draw at Sporting Lisbon’s Estadio Jose Alvalade eight months ago when Cristiano Ronaldo and Renato Sanches both rattled the bar for Portugal.

Ronaldo famously scored a hat-trick against their Iberian neighbours to rescue a 3-3 draw at the 2018 World Cup where both teams finished in the top two in Group B only to be eliminated in the last 16.

A fourth successive draw over 90 minutes is priced at 9/4 but a share of the spoils and both teams to score is 16/5 while another 0-0 is available at 8/1.

Cristiano Ronaldo Portugal

Luis Enrique named a 24-man squad instead of the permitted 26 so he will be keeping his fingers crossed his players do not pick up any injuries.

Spain are 5/4 favourites to beat Portugal who are 11/5 to win in the Spanish capital having finished runners-up to Ukraine during the group stage.

Portugal won from behind against Croatia and Luxembourg in two of their last four outings and that option is available at 14/1.

Their two matches against world champions France in the Nations League produced just one goal and we go 3/4 on under 2.5 and 11/5 on no goals or just one.

Talking Tactics

Injuries robbed Luis Enrique of the option of picking any Real Madrid players but he still has a wealth of talent in attack with Gerard Moreno, Alvaro Morata and Ferran Torres at his disposal.

Torres scored a hat-trick from the wing and lone striker Morata was also on target in a 6-0 Nations League drubbing of Germany in November when Enrique deployed a 4-5-1 formation but the Spain coach went with a 4-3-3 for the 3-1 World Cup qualifying win against Kosovo.

Portugal coach Fernando Santos has to find a way of incorporating Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Joao Felix, Diogo Jota and Bernardo Silva into a team which is likely to be in a 4-3-3 shape.

Goalscorer Odds

Ronaldo is the 16/5 favourite to break the deadlock or 13/10 to score any time on the back of his treble three years ago while Joao Felix and Jota are 14/5 and 3/1 to score respectively.

For Spain, Moreno is 4/1 to draw first blood and 9/5 to hit the back of the net, with Morata and Torres 15/8 and 13/5 just to score.

Daniel Olmo has struck in his last two games for Spain and is available at 16/5 to do so again or 8/1 to get the game’s first goal as he did against Kosovo.
