Spain v Argentina betting tips and odds

The men’s tournament has reached a thrilling climax in the group stage with still no nation guaranteed a place in the quarter-finals with one game remaining.

Spain were the 2/1 pre-tournament favourites in the Olympics men’s football odds and they have shortened to 7/4 with Brazil despite a goalless draw with Egypt and a late win against Australia.

Luis de la Fuente’s side are 10/11 to get the three points they need to secure a place in the last eight so let’s take a look at the markets and odds in our Spain v Argentina betting tips.

Match Odds

Spain have the best team at the Olympics with six members of their Euro 2020 squad in Japan but they have been underwhelming so far and needed an 81st-minute winner from Real Sociedad forward Mikel Oyarzabal to see off Australia.

Argentina surprisingly lost 2-0 to Australia in their opener but three days later edged Egypt 1-0 which means even a win against Spain may not secure qualification, with the Olyroos set to face the Pharaohs in their final group game.

The South Americans, coached by Fernando Batista, are 3/1 to beat the Spaniards while a draw is 12/5 for Wednesday’s clash.

De La Fuente has made full use of his squad, making a handful of changes for the late win against the Olyroos, but they are the only nation yet to concede and are priced at 21/10 to win to nil and at least one team not to score is 10/11 in the Spain v Argentina betting tips.

Argentina don’t have the likes of Lionel Messi at the Olympics but Premier League spotters will have noticed the inclusion of Brighton attacker Alex Mac Allister in the starting line-up against Egypt,  although it took a 52nd-minute goal from Lens defender Facundo Medina to seal the points.

Goals have been hard to come by for these nations at the 16-team tournament and we go 4/5 on under 2.5 goals which has occurred in all four matches.

Three of the four games involving these teams were goalless at the break which can be backed at 8/5, a draw is evens and Draw HT/Spain FT is available at 17/5.

Talking Tactics

With three games in the space of seven days during the group stage, De La Fuente is expected to ring the changes again with the likes of Marco Asensio, Dani Ceballos and Pedri set for starting roles in a 4-3-3 formation.

Spain had 15 shots compared with Australia’s two – six of which were on target – so they will be looking to their strikers to rediscover their scoring boots.

Argentina went with a 4-5-1 formation in their first two games in which CSKA Moscow striker Adolfo Gaich led the line.
