Sheff Wed v Huddersfield betting tips and odds

The opening round of the Carabao Cup threw up a classic Yorkshire encounter between League One side Sheffield Wednesday and Championship outfit Huddersfield.

Town are the 21/10 underdogs to advance and 10/3 third favourites to be relegated from the Championship at the end of the season.

The match already has one interesting story with experienced striker Jordan Rhodes re-joining the Terriers from the Owls after a difficult four-year spell at Hillsborough.

It should be a great way to start the season for both teams as we look at the markets and odds in our Sheff Wed v Huddersfield betting tips.

Match Odds

Last season was tough for Wednesday whose 12-point deduction for irregularities surrounding the sale of Hillsborough was reduced to six but they still went down after finishing bottom of the table, relegated on the final day of the season after a 3-3 draw at Derby.

Matters were not helped by new manager Darren Moore being struck down by Covid soon after joining the club in March from Doncaster.

Moore has made a couple of decent loan signings with midfielder Lewis Wing and Bailey Peacock-Farrell joining from Middlesbrough and Burnley respectively and left-back Jaden Brown has signed on a free transfer from Huddersfield.

Town boss Carlos Corberan has made a handful of moves in the transfer market, signing Norwich forward Danel Sinani and Chelsea centre-back Levi Colwill on loan while left-back Josh Ruffels has joined from Oxford.

Last season’s fixture ended 1-1 and four of the last six meetings have finished all square after 90 minutes, so we go 11/5 on a draw while the hosts are 27/20 in our Sheff Wed v Huddersfield betting tips.

At bigger odds, the visitors can be backed at 13/2 to win or draw, both teams to score in the second half and over 2.5 goals in the match while the Owls are 11/2 in the equivalent as a #GetAPrice special.

Talking Tactics

Moore liked to play a three-man defence in a 3-4-2-1 formation but with Rhodes now at their Yorkshire rivals, Josh Windass would have been expected to lead the line.

However, a hamstring injury sustained in a pre-season friendly against West Brom means the striker will be out for a “considerable amount of time” so on-loan QPR man Olamide Shodipo or Callum Paterson could start.

Town are likely to line up in a 4-3-3 shape in which Rhodes and Frazier Campbell will be the main target men.

Goalscorer Odds

Rhodes and Campbell are 11/2 to break the deadlock or 23/10 to score at any time while Sinani is 8/1 and 10/3 in the same markets.

Owls attacker Paterson is the 5/1 favourite to get the ball rolling but he missed the win against Port Vale with fluid on his knee and is not a certain starter.

Dominic Iorfa scored in that game and is 40/1 to get the game’s first goal or 18/1 to find the net while Wing is 10/1 and 4/1 in the two markets.
