Rafa Benitez is set to risk the wrath of those who love him so much on Merseyside by making an audacious swoop for wantaway striker Luis Suarez.
The Uruguayan has made it known that he wishes to leave Liverpool but a move to Italy has never been on the cards until now,
It seemed all but certain that last season’s the 23-goal man would engineer a move to Real Madrid once their managerial situation was resolved.
Los Blancos have been heavily linked with a move for the 26-year-old but their wandering eye has also seen them cast glances at the likes of Gareth Bale which could see Suarez look to Serie A for salvation.
Napoli have a superstar of their own in the shape of the controversial striker’s international team-mate Edinson Cavani.
However, El Matador is set to exit Naples this summer with a whole host of clubs squabbling over his signature.
Jose Mourinho is thought to be keen on adding the former Palermo forward to his Chelsea squad, and is willing to part with up to £50 million in order to do so.
That would land Benitez an almighty war chest with which to reshape his squad and snaring Suarez from his old employers is high on his agenda.
The ex-Ajax player’s transfer fee is likely to command a great portion of that received for Cavani but Napoli are keen to end the monopoly currently held over Serie A by Juventus and challenge in Europe.
Their eccentric chairman Auerlio De Laurentiis is keen to back his new manager and has hinted at pairing his number one target with Fernando Torres, in a move that is likely to entice Suarez further.
Despite setting his sights on a move to the Spanish capital, the chance to work with Benitez could sway Suarez, and with Real’s interest starting to wane the offer of Champions League football and a possible Scudetto challenge could tempt Suarez to make the move to Italy.
