Paul Lambert is hanging on to his job as Aston Villa manager by a thread – and a defeat against Newcastle United this Tuesday could see his short tenure ended sooner rather than later.
Lambert’s Villa are currently teetering on the edge of the relegation zone and have been slashed to 19/20 to be playing Championship football next season.
They’re out of the FA Cup after a dire defeat against Millwall and have an owner who has apparently lost interest in putting money into the club, making the hope of January reinforcements nothing more than a pipe dream for Lambert and the Villa faithful.
Meanwhile, Newcastle – or Newchâteau as nobody is calling them – have been busy making several French acquisitions and the willingness of the Magpies’ owners to spend money this January suggests that they still have faith in Alan Pardew and what he is trying to achieve.
Pardew is currently the second favourite to be out of a job at 4/1 but given the money recently spent and his mammoth eight-year contract, it’s hard to see any punt on his exit paying out.
However, whilst they’re not the longest odds you’ll encounter, the 1/2 offered for Lambert to be sacked next could be worth a punt – especially if they lose to Newcastle on Tuesday.
If you can see the Magpies winning that clash at 7/4 then getting on Lambert to go at the same time could be well worth consideration.
