Villa in for Porto star as Norwich stand firm on Hoolahan

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert could up his interest in Porto’s Steven Defour after being frustrated in his attempts to be reunited with Wes Hoolahan.

The former Norwich manager has been given short shrift from his previous employers with the Canaries resolute in their stance on keeping Hoolahan at Carrow Road.

The player himself has done all he can to force through a move, using a series of expletives about the club bemoaning their stance but comments from Norwich earlier today rate the player’s chances of moving to Villa Park before the window closes at zero per cent.

This could just be a bargaining ploy, with the East Anglian’s looking to get as much money as possible for their man and while Lambert will pursue all avenues, he could be tempted to reignite his interest in Defour.

The Porto man was said to be keen on joining the Midland’s club only to stall following interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

However, with Spurs’ interest not resulting in a concrete bid and the Porto man keen to play his way into Belgium’s World Cup squad a move to Villa Park could prove tempting.

The Villans are priced as 11/2 underdogs to beat Everton at Goodison Park this weekend and while Hoolahan remains Lambert’s preferred option, the arrival of either player would enhance the chances of an upset in Merseyside.

The 25-year-old has four league titles two his name from his time in Portugal and Belgium and would bring the sort of appetite for success and winning know-how that could propel Villa up the table and boost their 13/8 hopes of a top 10 finish.
