Unstoppable Bundesliga hotshot more ready than ever for Prem return
Published:As the dust settles on another weekend of football, the eagle-eyed among you will have noticed the unlikely name racing away at the top of the Bundesliga goalscorer charts.
And a few of you will have remembered the name Anthony Modeste from a simply dismal, and goalless, spell at Blackburn in 2012.
But it’s time to erase that memory, for the FC Cologne striker is very much a new man.
The Frenchman is in sensational form this season, and a fine hat-trick in his side’s 3-0 win over Hamburg yesterday took Modeste’s tally to a stunning 11 goals from nine games.
Regular chart toppers Robert Lewandowski and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have a comparatively lacklustre seven each, despite the wealth of midfield talent to supply them at Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund respectively.
Modeste could have had four at the weekend but for a missed penalty, but nevertheless, it’s highly like that FC Cologne are soon to be fending off numerous advances for their hotshot striker.
And this is no one-season fluke.
The former French U21 international hit 18 goals in 36 appearances for Die Geissbocke last season, after netting a similarly impressive 23 in 62 games for Hoffenheim.
Another 17 goals for Bastia in the season following his Rovers nightmare adds further weight to Modeste’s talent.
Valued at just over £7m by transfermarkt.co.uk, the 28-year-old looks ready now to do the business in the Premier League at the second time of asking.
In his four years away, the Cannes native has added a clinical finish to a 6ft 1in frame and excellent movement.
If he keeps firing in the goals in the run-up to the January transfer window, Modeste is set to be a very popular target.
