Which areas do they need to strengthen?

Anyone other than Arsene Wenger already knows the answer to this question. But, in the hope that the one man in north London yet to sing from the same hymn sheet reads this, we’ll try one last time:

DEFENSIVELY, ARSENE, YOU HAVE TO STRENGTHEN DEFENSIVELY THIS JANUARY!!

Who have they been linked with?

Sami Khedira, Mats Hummels, Winston Reid, Benedikt Howedes, Chris Smalling, Fabian Schar, Petr Cech, Yohan Cabaye, William Carvalho, Lars Bender, Christoph Kramer, Morgan Schneiderlin, Julian Draxler, Paul Pogba, Karim Benzema, Edinson Cavani.

January Wishlist Best Buys

Sami Khedira (Real Madrid)

Chances of signing: This deal has been in the pipeline for some time and seeing as the World Cup winner’s game-time hasn’t improved this season (he’s started one game in the entire campaign) a chance to protect the Arsenal back four on a regular basis must look rather appealing now.

Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

Chances of Signing: Adding a centre-back of Hummels’ well-regarded stature would certainly be a feather in Wenger’s cap, but battling it out with Manchester United may see the Frenchman wither under the strain of a bidding war.

Winston Reid (West Ham)

Chances of Signing: Rumours suggest the Kiwi Hammer has agreed to sign for a Premier League club once his contract runs out at Upton Park this summer. If that club isn’t already Arsenal, then the north Londoners may want to tempt their capital rivals into cashing in on the player this month, which would still cost a damn-sight less than Hummels.

We Recommend…

Valon Behrami (Hamburg)

Well versed in Premier League play thanks to his time at West Ham, Behrami is a defensive midfielder of underrated quality and would allow Wenger to strengthen other areas of the side this January, due to his likely diminutive price tag.

The Swiss 29-year-old is only in his first season with the German club but has produced impressive numbers of 4.4 tackles and 2.6 interceptions per game so far.
