Anzhi Makhachkala’s player car boot sale has seen Spurs renew their interest in Brazilian playmaker Willian, who could be made available at around half the £30 million the Russian’s paid for him according to rumours.
It’s not often that a club’s entire squad becomes available to buy, but that’s exactly what’s occurred at Russian Premier League outfit Anzhi, who are zipping shut the wallet and looking to offload all their highly paid stars.
One such top whack earner sure to get bumped is Brazilian Willian, the subject of intense interest from both Chelsea and Spurs last summer, before the 24-year-old opted for a switch to the then high-rolling Russians from Shakhtar Donetsk.
A year later and with Gareth Bale priced narrowly at 2/7 to set sail for Real Madrid by summer’s end, this represents Tottenham’s perfect opportunity to go back in for the playmaker.
With no fee yet agreed for Bale’s services it could be argued that 11/5 to stay at White Hart Lane may still be direction to travel concerning this saga, though all the noises from the player are not those of a man committed to the Tottenham cause.
Regardless of the Bale narrative though, if as it is rumoured offers in the region of £15m will be enough to pin down Willian’s signature, then Andre Villas-Boas would be foolish not to throw his hat back into the ring with gusto.
After all Willian can operate anywhere across the midfield or in an advanced position behind the main striker as he did so effectively when deployed there by Shakhtar in last season’s Champions
League, scoring twice against Chelsea in the group stages.
As Clint Dempsey has already made a shock return stateside, this only really leaves Aaron Lennon and Gylfi Sigurdsson as competition with Bale for those wide spots, so there is room to accommodate the Brazilian in any given scenario.
