As recently as last night, it seemed that Tottenham Hotspur were the only realistic contenders to snatch versatile youngster Jeremy Toljan away from Bundesliga side Hoffenheim. But now Chelsea and Liverpool have joined the hunt for the 22-year-old.
Despite missing a chunk of last season with a tendon injury, the versatile German made a significant impact for Die Kraichgauer last term, featuring 21 times last term – including a standout display in April’s defeat of Bayern Munich.
An extremely versatile player – featuring on both flanks in defence and midfield last term – he’d be a valuable addition to any suitors. And having played every minute of Germany’s triumph at the European Under-21 Championship earlier this summer, he’s a man for the big occasion.
Right now it’s Spurs who still have the edge in the tussle to secure his services, with 9/4 on offer for the Stuttgart native to join Mauricio Pochettino’s men before the window closes.
However, Chelsea have muscled their way into the running. And the current Premier League champions are clipping at the heels of their London rivals in this race, with 5/2 on offer for the player to join the Blues this summer.
And while they’re definitely third in the running, our traders aren’t ruling out an Anfield arrival for Toljan just yet.
The Reds are 6/1 to add the Hoffenheim prodigy to their ranks, and with Toljan’s compatriot Jurgen Klopp in charge and Champions League football back on the menu on Merseyside, that could prove a tough proposition to turn down.
Whoever does secure the two-footed talent’s services look likely to do so at a bargain fee. With just a year left on his contract in Baden-Wurttemberg, it’s believed his current employers could let him go for as little as £3.1m in this window.
So, will it be Poch, Conte or Klopp who get their hands on Toljan? Or could he surprise us all by staying put…
