Sunderland expect busy deadline day with list of ambitious targets

Whether you’re a football manager, chairman, player, agent or fan the approaching end of the summer’s transfer window is about to dominate lives around the country for the next 48 hours.

Frantically busy times are expected for a few clubs, with Manchester United reportedly looking to buy themselves out of another crisis and Arsenal in need, as always, of a new striker.

But one club who could have more action than most is Gus Poyet’s Sunderland, as the Uruguayan seeks reinforcements at the Stadium of Light that will help avoid a repeat of last season’s dramatic relegation battle.

A reported list of the former Brighton boss’ targets should make for happy reading for Black Cats’ fans, with a number of impressive names cropping up.

Manchester City’s Micah Richards has been supposedly seeking a new home for the best part of the summer and the north east could well provide it as Poyet looks to the out of favour defender to bolster his back line.

Along with the Englishman, defence seems a priority for the Black Cats boss, with Celtic Dutchman Virgil van Dijk and Belgian centre-back Toby Alderweireld both on the Sunderland radar as well.

A winless start to the season, which leaves Newcastle’s arch rivals as 4/1 relegation candidates, makes Poyet’s defensive obsession understandable and considering the standard of club the targeted trio have previously been linked to, capturing any one of them would be seen as a Black Cats coup

It’s not just his back four that the former Chelsea midfielder wants to bolster, Inter Milan midfielder Ricardo Alvarez, who spent the summer as part of the Argentina squad that finished as World Cup runners-up, is also among the names Mackems chiefs will be looking to do deals for.
