Sturridge move dependent on Chelsea bid for Germany star

Chelsea have already spent big this summer, and hope to maximise their spending with the £20million addition of German international Andre Schurrle by 11pm tonight.

Roberto Di Matteo is confident of landing the Bayer Leverkusen forward, attracted by his ability to perform either as a winger or central striker.

His seven goals in just 17 German caps have bolstered his value immeasurably, and as such Leverkusen are demanding a hefty fee for the relatively inexperienced 21-year-old.

One club who will be hoping the deal does go through will be Liverpool, as the transfer could boost their hopes of landing Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge.

After allowing Andy Carroll out on loan, Brendan Rodgers needs reinforcements up front, and sees Sturridge as an ideal player to integrate into his new system at Anfield.

Sturridge is currently Chelsea’s only senior back-up to first-choice striker Fernando Torres, and therefore a new Blues attacker would have to come in for Di Matteo to consider doing business.

But should the European champions tie up a deal for Schurrle, the prospective arrangement taking Sturridge to Anfield could materialise sooner rather than later.

The 22-year-old forward is desperate to play regularly in order to increase his chances of regular England selection, and would be given that opportunity at Liverpool.

He has also outlined frustrations at being utilised out wide, and with Liverpool’s need for central attacking options pressing, Sturridge would welcome the opportunity to play down the middle on Merseyside.

Therefore, Liverpool supporters will be wishing Chelsea every success in their pursuit of their latest transfer target tonight.
