Sturridge boosted to score the opener in Spurs v Liverpool

The big matches keep coming for Liverpool at the start of the Premier League season and although a 3-1 loss at Manchester City might have knocked their confidence, a trip to Tottenham Hotspur could put them back on track.

The Reds have won their last three matches against Spurs, but that far from tells the full story, as they absolutely flattened the Lilywhites 9-0 on aggregate in their two games last season.

The first of those encounters was at White Hart Lane, where Liverpool’s 5-0 win spelled the end of Andre Villas-Boas’ tenure.

Although a similar result is less likely this early in the season, the Reds’ 17/10 odds to win the match, which are the same as Spurs’ price to grab three points, look tempting.

Even more generously, Ladbrokes have boosted Daniel Sturridge’s price to nab the first goal at White Hart Lane from 6/1 to 7/1.

Although the England international missed out on the trip to north London last season through injury, he has scored on both his previous trips to Spurs while wearing a Chelsea shirt.

Last season only Luis Suarez scored more goals than Sturridge’s 21 in the Premier League, with the 24-year-old scoring in 19 of the 29 games he played in England’s top flight.

Sturridge also bagged the opener in three of Liverpool’s first four league matches last season and in nine games in total – the joint-most by any player in the division.

Although Spurs are yet to concede a goal in winning their first two Premier League games this season, they were particularly sluggish starters last term.

The Lilywhites scored the first goal in just 19 of their league matches and were beaten to the punch  in all but one of their eight games against the top four.
