Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood looks poised to accelerate his pursuit of Romanian wonderkid Dorin Rotariu in a bid to fend off interest from Manchester United.
The 18-year-old Dinamo Bucharest winger has scored five goals in 17 games in Liga 1 this term and claims to have recently met with representatives of the champions to discuss a possible move to Old Trafford.
However, with Red Devils boss David Moyes adding two-time Chelsea player of the year Juan Mata to his midfield this week a mid-season move for the youngster seems unlikely.
United already boast young prospects in midfield in the shape of Adnan Januzaj and Wilfried Zaha and with the latter being farmed out to Cardiff City with just 29 minutes of United game time under his belt Rotariu could be tempted to head to the capital.
Sherwood is said to be looking to shake up his midfield, with Lewis Holtby and Etienne Capoue deemed surplus to requirements, and Rotariu represents an option that could have a long-term future at the club.
The youngster shares an agent with Spurs defender Vlad Chiriches and Sherwood will hope that the chance to join-up with his fellow countryman at White Hart Lane will tempt the winger to leave Dinamo.
Spurs are currently priced at 9/4 to finish in the top four of the Premier League this year and while Rotariu’s arrival wouldn’t be expected to have an instant impact on the Lilywhites’ chances his signing would be a major coup for the club.
While United’s interest has yet to see a concrete bid made the champions are credited with a long-standing interest in the youngster and Chelsea have also been firing admiring glances his way.
But, with United and the Blues more likely to make a move in the summer, Sherwood could be tempted to test Bucharest’s resolve in the coming days to steal a march on his rivals.
