It’s a given that players at lesser clubs who prove they can score goals regularly in the Premier League will be soon be pilfered by the big guns and this time it’s West Brom’s Saido Berahino.
The England U-21 star showed plenty of promise last season, scoring nine all-competition goals for the Baggies and has followed that up with a blistering start to the current campaign.
Berahino has already reached 2/3 of his entire tally of last season in just nine appearances.
Unsurprisingly, speculation linking him with potential moves away from the Hawthorns have begun in earnest.
Leading the early pack it would seem are Tottenham, though other names have been mentioned and this has led to some rearguard action from West Brom manager Alan Irvine.
Clearly a little incensed by suggestions Spurs are considering a £15m bid for Berahino services, Irvine has spoken out.
“It doesn’t sound a lot. I would be absolutely astonished if anyone could sign Saido from us for £15million,” he said.
“You look at some of the fees going around in the transfer market that’s just been, everybody seems to start at £7million.
“He added: ‘But £15million doesn’t sound like a lot of money for a talented, young, English player with great potential who is playing really, really well in the Premier League at the moment and who is scoring goals. It would have to be higher than that.”
West Brom’s next game arrives against Manchester United on Monday night where Berahino is a 13/5 shot to score anytime.
