When a certain one-club Liverpudlian announced earlier this month that this season as Liverpool skipper would be his last, you couldn’t move for tributes about his career even though all he was doing was moving teams.

The handling of Steven Gerrard’s announcement set a dangerous precedent, as another Premier League stalwart draws closer to ending his long-standing association with Manchester United, to exactly none of the same fanfare.

Darren Fletcher has been a Red Devil since 1995 and has made 222 appearances for the club in all competitions during what has been a illustrious career.

But, as it is revealed that West Brom have made an enquiry over the 30-year-old, whose contract is up in the summer, the Scot could be forgiven for tuning in to Sky Sports News in bewilderment, expecting a 4-hour stream of tributes and finding none.

In reality though, the tenacious central midfielder wouldn’t want the same treatment as Gerrard, he’d just get on with his job, like he has done since breaking into Sir Alex Ferguson’s side in 2003.

With Louis van Gaal happy to ring the changes at Old Trafford, Fletcher could find himself out the door this month as his contract situation tempts the Dutchman into cashing in on any enquiries about the Scot.

Adding the 66-cap international to the Baggies’ squad would be a remarkable coup for Tony Pulis at his new job, bringing a wealth of experience, bundles of energy and a winning mentality to a team that is 1/4 to win a relegation battle looking likely to go to the wire this term.

Fletcher’s acquisition could turn the lights out on one of his international teammates’ Hawthorns career, with one of James Morrison or Graham Dorrans unlikely to stack up quite as favourably against the Man Utd man.

With Craig Gardner also available to inhabit the centre-circle it could be that Dorrans, a transfer target of Burnley’s this January, is ushered out the exit door to accommodate the Scottish skipper, despite starting 19 league games this season.
