Fernando Torres may have scored both Liverpool goals to sink Chelsea but he has warned the rest of the Premier League to beware as he is still not back to his absolute best.
Torres’ slow start to the season as he attempted to gain fitness and form following a year of injuries has been labelled as one of the reasons for Liverpool’s disappointing opening to the campaign.
However, their victory over Carlo Ancelotti’s reigning Premier League champions has shown their progress in recent weeks as they have moved into the top half of the table for the first time this season.
Liverpool’s recent burst of three straight league wins as also brought them back to the periphery of the Premier League title picture after looking like relegation candidates at the start of last month.
They are now 50/1 to win the Premier League title and will be keen to continue their recent revival when travelling to Wigan next.
It needed a hat-trick from substitute Steven Gerrard to overcome Napoli in their last Europa League game and it came as no surprise that it was the other member of Liverpool’s attacking double act that sunk Chelsea.
Torres has a fine record of playing Chelsea at home as he has now netted six goals against them for Liverpool in five games at Anfield.
Meanwhile, his double improves his record to three goals in the last three Premier League games, after scoring just once in his opening eight games this season.
One of the main differences against Chelsea was the extra pace and energy in Torres’ performance, as he seemed more eager to mix up his game and make his trademark runs into both wide areas and in behind defenders.
The clinical nature of his finishes was also displayed, which has arguably been missing in the early stages of the campaign.
Torres has scored twice in four games against Wigan, but these goals have both come at Anfield.
Liverpool have not won at Wigan in the last two Premier League seasons, but they are 8/11 to do so this year. See the full Wigan vs Liverpool Premier League betting odds market.
