Whenever a big Premier League team is struggling, it doesn’t take long for a host of transfer targets to be plucked out of thin air as potential solutions to the problems and badly-rocking Liverpool are the latest focus.
The Metro newspaper reports that Brendan Rodgers is sizing up a three-handed raid touching the £50m mark for Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech, Porto striker Jackson Martinez and Norwich winger Nathan Redmond.
Following a ruinous run of three defeats in the Premier League, leaving the Reds clinging to their top-four ambitions by a wispy thread and given a spiralling price of 3/1 as a direct result, it is hardly shocking to see such speculation arise.
In fact, the first two names on the list make total sense. Despite a summer overhaul by Rodgers which included a host of new signings, a winter revamp, or tweak at the very least, is still needed in certain positions.
But while no one would argue a world-class keeper and a fearsome striker are top priority, throwing a winger into the mix would represent a strange choice, even by the Liverpool boss’ standards.
Redmond is a talent, but then so is Jordan Ibe, currently thriving on loan in the same division as the Canaries man.
However, it’s not just Ibe’s first-team path Redmond would potentially be blocking, this is a position on the pitch where the Reds are already having problems juggling the squad.
Raheem Sterling, Philippe Coutinho, Adam Lallana, Lazar Markovic, Fabio Borini and Suso currently vie for the wide berths even before Daniel Sturridge’s eventual inclusion back in the side places a further premium down the line.
If Cech and Martinez arrive in tandem during the January transfer window, it would be an unlikely but celebrated coup, while Redmond following them through the door would only baffle.
