We’ve barely entered June and yet Manchester City have already spent more than £70m since the Premier League season ended.
In short, they mean business next term – serious business.
And it could get worse yet for their rivals.
Yesterday we reported that Liverpool were leading the chase for Southampton ace Virgil van Dijk.
The Reds looked assured at 1/3, but now it’s all change.
Jurgen Klopp is still favourite to land the Dutchman, but it’s now 8/11 Van Dijk moves to Anfield this summer.
Chelsea were second in the betting at 4/1, but the Blues have now doubled to 8s.
And it’s all because Man City are prepared to gazump their Premier League rivals.
The Citizens have been slashed from 7/1 to just 9/4 to land the Dutch international.
That market move has been prompted by the news that the Etihad outfit are reportedly ready to offer Van Dijk a £180,000-per-week five-year deal, with the Saints pocketing £50m.
The Citizens are no strangers to spending big bucks on defenders, with John Stones arriving from Everton last summer for a similar fee.
This latest development is certainly set to test Liverpool’s resolve, and it remains to be seen whether the Reds are willing to compete.
Man City have already shelled out £43.6m for winger Bernardo Silva from Monaco, and laid out another £34.7m for Benfica goalkeeper Ederson Moraes.
Little wonder they’re 21/10 favourites to win the Premier League next season.
