Hull are so desperately short of strikers that Steve Bruce considered playing centre-back Harry Maguire as a makeshift forward in their last Premier League game.
In the end the former Manchester United skipper decided to go with Sone Aluko on his own up top, but the hatful of chances the 25-year-old missed not only cost the Tigers the match, but surely convinced the boss that a new recruit is required in January
Linked with Jordan Rhodes earlier in the month, latest reports indicate that the KC Stadium side are unwilling to pursue the Blackburn man at inflated costs and face financial ruin should they be relegated at 6/4 odds.
With the loan route preferred, there aren’t many better options out there than our three suggested targets:
Obafemi Martins – Seattle Sounders
Bringing in MLS players during their offseason has been a tried and trusted move for the rest of the league in the past and with the former Newcastle striker fresh from a stellar season, capturing the Nigerian makes the most sense.
Martins scored 17 times for the Sounders last term and is yet to report back to the club for preseason training.
Fraizer Campbell – Crystal Palace
The arrival of another loanee, Yaya Sanogo, means Campbell may find first-team starts for Alan Pardew few and far between for the rest of the season.
A season spent at the KC in 2008 and a previous working relationship with Bruce at Sunderland make this an extremely good fit for all parties.
Fabio Borini – Liverpool
Consecutive starts in Brendan Rodgers’ side hinted that the Italian’s time may have finally come on Merseyside, but a swift return to the bench has ended such hopes.
Instead a temporary move away from Anfield looks more likely now that Daniel Sturridge is about to return, which should help the former Chelsea forward rediscover his form, as it did with Sunderland last term.
