Life at Newcastle hasn’t been at its rosiest since the New Year’s celebrations fizzled out, but they could well be in line for a spirit lifter at the sight of a returning Loic Remy.
One win and one draw in nine games in all competitions has rightly brought the mood down around St James’ Park and the suspension of the on loan Frenchman for three games certainly didn’t help matters.
It would be easy to see why the QPR man’s return to the Newcastle fold would be celebrated with gusto as Newcastle entertain Aston Villa in the north east. The Magpies didn’t score a single goal during Remy’s suspension.
In fact the Geordies have only scored three times in the last six games, even with Remy in the starting lineup, but that shouldn’t detract Alan Pardew putting a positive spin on things ahead of the Villa battle.
The 27-year-old is Newcastle’s top scorer this season with 11 Premier League goals and his return to match action is celebrated by Ladbrokes in giving his odds to score first a price boost, swelling them out from 9/2 to a very lucrative 5/1.
Despite a scoring drought – Remy has scored just three times in 12 games in all competitions – it’s certainly worth getting on the former Marseille man.
Firstly, Remy prefers playing at home with six of his 11 goals coming in front of the St James’ faithful. He also performs better in the first half, with a staggering eight of his tally being scored before the orange sucking begins.
That certainly raises the hopes that he’ll get the game’s first goal when Villa, who’ve conceded the first goal of the game in over half of their league outings this season, come to town and it’ll be the fifth time this season that he’s done so should he manage it.
