Certain transfer rumours have more shelf life than powdered milk, but just occasionally it would be most satisfying to see one or two, or even five of them resolved.
Below is a quintet of names whose playing futures have formed the backdrop of the January transfer window 2015 and generally occupied more column inches than David Beckham’s hairstyles over many years.
Mats Hummels to Manchester United or Real Madrid?
This transfer has been rumbling on so long it’s probably registered on the Richter scale by now. The Red Devils desperately need the world class qualities the German international defender would bring to their 1/3-rated top-four bid, they just can’t get the deal anywhere near done.
Saido Berahino to Tottenham or Liverpool?
Perhaps Tony Pulis’ ship-steadying capabilities will have a similarly calming effect on the young star striker he has inherited at the Hawthorns. However, if Pulis cannot prevent Berahino’s exit, then it would be great for everyone involved if he left sooner rather than later.
Mario Balotelli to anyone that’ll have him
If the Italian had rediscovered any of the goal-scoring form that made him a fan favourite at Manchester City, then Liverpool would surely be closer than 6/1 for a top-four spot in mid-January. Balotelli hasn’t scored a single league goal though and a move back to Serie A seems most probable.
Morgan Schneiderlin to Arsenal, Manchester United or Tottenham?
Southampton fans would probably donate a finger each to keep their French midfield maestro at St Mary’s until at least the end of this season. That might be easier said than done with so many top clubs eager to land his services.
Jay Rodriguez to Manchester City or Tottenham?
It seemed that only injury prevented Rodriguez from leaving during the great summer exodus which was supposed to hail the Saints’ demise. Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham made the most sense, but recent murmurs appear to put the champions right in the frame. Some noises from the player himself wouldn’t go amiss.
