Man Utd may rue the day they let Hargreaves join Man City
Published:Roberto Mancini may have landed the bargain of the season with the confirmation that Owen Hargreaves has signed for Manchester City.
Hargreaves has passed the medical and proved his fitness in front of the Manchester City backroom staff, and with a year to prove his worth to the club, he has plenty of time to do so.
The 30-year-old will find plenty of players in front of him in the Manchester City midfield and will have to bide his time as he waits for a first team chance, but with Yaya Toure leaving for the African Nations in January, Hargreaves will get som game time.
Game time that will be crucial in defining the latest chapter of Hargreaves career and if it doesn’t work out, the Canada-born England midfielder will certainly call time on his career.
However he has been handed a lifeline by Manchester City and it’s a no-lose deal for the Manchester City hierarchy.
The terms of his one-year deal are unclear but unless Hargreaves’ agent bears some resemblance to Ari Gold, it’s likely that the midfielder is on a bonus heavy contract.
Which means Manchester City don’t spend anything if he doesn’t play, and if he can reach his best form, they’re paying a small amount for a great midfielder.
It was rumoured that Hargreaves offered to play for Manchester United for free before they released him this summer and Sir Alex Ferguson will be keeping a close eye on Hargreaves situation at their nieghbours.
If the rumours are true, it could be a huge mistake by Manchester United letting Hargreaves go and if the midfielder plays a part in a successful Manchester City title bid, someone in the Manchester United backroom staff will have questions to answer.
Manchester City are 2/1 to win the Premier League title with Manchester United available at 5/4 and the title odds suggest the title will be heading to Manchester at the end of the season.
