Not content with smashing their club transfer record fee on Juan Mata, Manchester United could make it a January window to remember if they can pilfer Andros Townsend from Tottenham, while rumours linking the champions to Toni Kroos still linger.
David Moyes was interested in bringing Townsend to Old Trafford in the summer, but now the Scot is believed to be firming up that interest with a sensational bid on deadline day rumoured to be in the region of £20m.
There is certainly room for the flying touchline-hugger at United, where Moyes is letting Nani leave the club on loan, with plenty of other clubs around Europe interested in taking the out-of-favour Portuguese player.
Whether or not Tottenham would be prepared to part company with Townsend is another matter of course, especially after their top-four tilt was trampled on by Manchester City with a chastening 5-1 defeat at White Hart Lane.
Spurs next get a chance to steer their ship back on course against Hull, where the Lilywhites are considered the 9/10 favourites to bounce back with a win at the KC Stadium against Steve Bruce’s tumbling Tigers.
Whether or not Tim Sherwood will still be able to call on the services of Townsend for that game remains to be seen.
Spurs do have record signing Erik Lamela, Belgian Nacer Chadli, Aaron Lennon, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Christian Eriksen who can operate from the flanks, though Townsend’s burst onto the England scene this season makes him a top talent to let go.
Meanwhile, Schalke flop Lewis Holtby is nearing a move to Fulham on loan for the rest of the season after failing to make an impression at White Hart Lane.
