Robin van Persie left Arsenal in the summer of 2012 in a quest to win the Premier League. 12 months later, he’d done exactly what he set out to do with Manchester United, after moving for roughly £22.5m.
And it looks as though another Gooner will take a similar path.
All eyes have so far been on what Arsene Wenger’s next move will be, while plenty have been monitoring developments surrounding Alexis Sanchez too.
Things looked to have quietened down as far as Mesut Ozil was concerned. Or so we thought.
Reports this morning are suggesting that the World Cup winner will seek pastures new when the transfer window opens – regardless of what Wenger decides to do.
The Germany international has previously said he’d only stay at the Emirates if the French boss remains in charge, but there’s seemingly a new twist in this tail – and Jose Mourinho could have the last laugh.
Despite recording a phenomenal 19 top-flight assists and netting six goals last campaign, Ozil has struggled to really get going this time out.
In fact, his performance in the 3-0 against West Ham last week was arguably his best since the Gunners breezed past Chelsea – way back in September.
Perhaps the German star is just starting to find his feet again this season, which would be ideal for Arsenal as they look to secure a top four finish.
But could helping his side achieve a Champions League spot be Ozil’s parting gift?
Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “The odds of Ozil reuniting with Mourinho are shortening by the minute, regardless of United’s Champions League prospects. If for whatever reason the German snubs Manchester, the rest of the list represents a who’s who of top European clubs.”
