It may be pure coincidence that Manchester United and Arsenal both play in a rather festive red, but one of these two teams could be set to deliver a Christmas gift this year that’s better than anything you could find in Santa’s rather unfortunately named “sack”.
The top at Christmas market is a complex one, often difficult to predict over the years, the team occupying the summit position, more often than not, fails to go on to win the league.
So while joint Premier League favourites Manchester City and Chelsea may be obvious choices at odds of 21/10 and 9/4 respectively with Ladbrokes, punters may be better served by looking elsewhere.
Liverpool’s are 15/2 shots in this market after becoming the 12th team in 22 Premier League seasons to squander a Christmas lead but after the loss of Luis Suarez, it could be wiser to back one of their two red-shirted rivals.
Manchester United are set to benefit from a kinder set of opening fixtures than the ones handed to them last term under David Moyes and with Louis van Gaal keen to drill his players into a well-oiled machine the 7/2 offered on the Red Devils returning the Premier League summit come December 25th tempts.
Like Liverpool last season, United could benefit from a lack of European football, allowing them to build some early momentum and even a lead at the top while their rivals deal with the fixture-laden demands of the Champions League group stage.
With United top in two of the last four Premier League seasons at Christmas, they are certainly worth considering, though those adopting an out with the old, in with the new philosophy may want to back Arsene Wenger’s new and improved Arsenal to do the business.
The signing of Alexis Sanchez has been among the most eye-catching transfers of the summer so far and with plenty of attacking verve on display in their 3-0 win over Manchester City in the Community Shield, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Gunners carry through some of the momentum from that victory into the season to come.
Only goal difference separated them from top spot last December and with many predicting the north London side to continue where they left off, the 5/1 offered on it being an Arsenal Christmas could be the one for you.
