Goals have been scarce for these two sides in the Premier League so far and it’s difficult to envisage anything other than a tense affair at Anfield.

League leaders they might be, but Liverpool’s over-reliance on Daniel Sturridge to find the net is still something of a concern and others must step up to the plate to keep the victories rolling in.

The Reds were soundly beaten 3-1 at St Mary’s last season after turning in one of their worst performances of the campaign, though the Anfield encounter produced the same 1-0 scoreline on which Liverpool have laid the foundations of a successful start in the Premier League.

Another repeat of that score is of course tempting, priced at 13/2 with Ladbrokes.

Liverpool’s quest to score goals will be hindered by facing one of the league’s meanest defences so far – the Saints have conceded just twice in four games, allowing the least shots on target of any side – while the hosts will be without their most creative force in Philippe Coutinho, injured for a month.

Throw into the mix the fact Southampton have rustled up the sum total of two goals themselves thus far and the 10/11 on under 2.5 goals is a coupon-filler all day long, while the 27/10 on under 1.5 goals in total, or even the stalemate at 11/1, come into play.

Interestingly, the three Premier League games in which Liverpool have triumphed in 1-0 have all seen the solitary strike arrive before the break, making the 12/5 on that scoreline at half-time an enticing punt.

If the deadlock is broken, then that man Sturridge at 3/1 is always going to be top choice since starting the scoring three times already this season.

It could be a long afternoon at Anfield and Saints leaving with a point at 3/1 would be a good covering bet.
